感恩节的由来英文作文

The Origin of Thanksgiving Day Thanksgiving Day is an important traditional festival in the United States and Canada, which is filled with rich history and cultural significance. Its origin can be traced back to the early days of the American colonies. In 1620, a group of English pilgrims known as the Pilgrims set sail across the Atlantic Ocean on the Mayflower. They were seeking religious freedom and a new life in the New World. After a long and arduous journey, they finally landed at Plymouth, Massachusetts in the winter. The first winter in the new land was extremely harsh for the Pilgrims. They faced shortages of food, cold weather, and diseases. Many of them died. However, they received help from the local Native Americans, especially a Wampanoag Indian named Squanto. Squanto taught the Pilgrims how to grow corn, hunt wild turkeys, and fish in the nearby rivers. With his guidance, the Pilgrims were able to adapt to the new environment and have a bountiful harvest in the following year. To express their gratitude for the help they had received and the successful harvest, the Pilgrims decided to hold a celebration. In 1621, they invited the Wampanoag Indians to join them in a three-day feast. During this feast, they shared various foods such as venison, fish, corn, and of course, wild turkeys. This event is widely regarded as the first Thanksgiving celebration. Over the years, Thanksgiving became an annual tradition in the American colonies. Different regions held their own celebrations at different times. In 1863, during the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed Thanksgiving Day as a national holiday to be celebrated on the last Thursday of November. This was done to unite the nation and give thanks for the blessings amidst the difficult times. In Canada, Thanksgiving also has its roots in the harvest traditions. European settlers brought the custom of giving thanks for a good harvest to Canada. It is celebrated on the second Monday of October. Canadians also gather with family and friends, enjoy a big meal, and express gratitude for the things they have. Today, Thanksgiving Day remains a time for families and friends to come together. People prepare elaborate feasts centered around turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, and pumpkin pie. It is not only a day to enjoy delicious food but also a time to reflect on the things we are thankful for, such as our loved ones, good health, and the opportunities in life. The spirit of gratitude that originated from those early days continues to be an important part of this beloved holiday.
